Just like anything else in life quality is usually proportional to price. Betta fishes are no different. High quality fishes can cost you hundreds of dollars (though very rare). The most expensive betta i’ve seen was sold in aquabid for more than $100. It was a new type of plakat which colors and patters are incredibly similar to koi. If i remember correctly the seller’s id was niwit. He’s a professional betta breeder from thailand and well-known for his fancy-colored bettas.
Normal people, including me, won’t want to spend hundreds on a single fish. The most expensive betta I have cost me about $8 each. They’re beautiful little fishes. One was a marble halfmoon and the other was a copper plakat.
If you’ve never keep a betta fish before just buy a cheap plakat or veiltail betta. They are the easiest types to keep. Once you get the hang of it you could try buying more expensive bettas.
Anyway if it’s your own money you’re spending no one can stop you if you want to spend $80 or $100 for a single fish. Just make sure you know how to keep the betta healthy and entertained. After all it is a living being, not a soulless toy.
